The Martha’s Vineyard Sharks beat the Nashua Silver Knights on a foggy night on the Vineyard. Trevor Breton (WNEU) faced off against Jake Mellin (Hartford) in a game that would decide who would overtake first place in the Futures League. The Silver Knights were able to get a run early with an RBI from Johnny Adams (Boston College). Both pitchers then settled in until the 4th inning when both teams were able to score a run apiece. A Stephen Sauter (Boston College) double put the Silver Knights up 2-0, but the Sharks were able to get a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
Dylan Tice (IUP) was able to score on a wild pitch after a leadoff double. Nashua pushed across another run in the top of the 5th inning to make the score 3-1. In the 6th inning the weirdness occurred. Tad Gold (Endicott) and Tice were able to get on base before a Ryan Siegel (Mercyhurst) double drove in the tying runs. Nik Campero (UMASS) skied a single into the fog between 1st and 2nd base, which became lost to the fielders. This RBI put the Sharks up 4-3 when the umpires suspended the game temporarily due to fog. After about an hour of discussing the conditions worsened and the game was called as final.
The Sharks moved into first place ahead of the Silver Knights in the Futures League. Siegel remains as the league-leader in batting average at .385, while starter Trevor Breton continues to lead in earned run average. The Sharks return to action Tuesday (7/23) at Wachusett. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm.
